1. What are hammocks made of and what is the difference?

Our hammocks are made from either natural cotton or weather-resistant DuranSun®️ (polyester cord) and come in a great variety of colours.

The main differences are that cotton hammocks are softer and slightly more comfortable, as they stretch and mould more to your body shape. Cotton is the best choice if comfort is your main priority, but due require more protection from the elements when not in use.

DuranSun®️ (polyester) hammocks offer the best weather resistance properties and are the best option for those that like to leave their hammock outdoors for extended periods of time. Polyester is a well regarded marine material and offers great protection against UV and is resistant to rot. Our polyester material is soft spun so does not have a harsh or waxy feel - it looks and feels very similar to cotton.

Both types still require levels of care to prolong their life, please see below and your hammock instructions.

2. How long will my hammock last, and what special care should I give it?

Your hammock will last for many years if you give it the proper care. It should be sheltered from the elements where possible when not in use, such as not being left outdoors for long periods of time, especially in sunlight and rain. We also suggest wearing appropriate clothing while you are resting in your hammock. Try to avoid buttons, velcro, jewellery, shoes, watches or any other object that might grab or cut cords. Nevertheless, cut, broken or burned cords can be repaired by knotting the ends. If you want to leave your hammock outside for extended periods of time we recommend a hammock cover. Further details are provided with your hammock instructions.

3. How do you hang a hammock?

Hammocks are a very versatile piece of indoor or outdoor furniture and can be hung nearly anywhere by attaching to a strong wall, tree, post, fence, sailboat mast, etc.

When hanging your Mexican hammock you require a space of approx 3.5 metres or greater. A rope (cord or chain) should be attached to the hammock loop ends and continued up in a nice arc so it is tied about 1.8m (6ft) from the ground. At the lowest point, the hammock should hang down to a level between your knees and your hips.

For longer or shorter spans simply adjust the length of rope used and hanging heights. For longer distances, this can be simply achieved by using longer rope and also tying higher to create the proper hanging height between your waist and knees. Hanging a hammock in a shorter space can also be achieved by knotting the end of your hammock to shorten its total length. Alternatively, shorter distances can also be achieved by having the ropes tied higher up (this will create more of a banana shape to the hammock though). Both ends don't need to be fixed from the same height, as long as the end of each hammock is even.

For a wood or concrete wall, you can drill or screw in a heavy-duty hook to use as an attachment point.

Please note, hanging accessories are not included with hammock purchase. This is due to the fact that there is no 'one size fits all' hanging accessory and different locations and setups will require different items. So rather than charge you for something that may not work in your location, we allow you to purchase only what you need.

Further hanging instructions, along with a use and care guide is included with every hammock purchase.

4. Can I choose my hammock colour?

Yes, no problem. A large selection of hammock colours are available to choose from. Simply click on the hammock image you would like and from within this page you can select your preferred size, plus any additionally hanging accessories you may need then purchase your hammock.

5. I don't have a credit card, can I still make a purchase?

Yes, certainly, no problem there. Proceed to place your order through the website where during the checkout phase you will be given the option of selecting your payment preference. Either credit card, bank deposit or Afterpay. Select the bank deposit option and you will be provided with our account details. Then continue to confirm the order. Your purchase will be confirmed via email and we will ship as soon as the payment reaches us. Alternatively, you are welcome to email us through your order, and we'll send you through our bank details so you can make a direct bank deposit or internet transfer. Once payment has cleared we'll have your purchase sent straight out to you. Want to pay another way? Just let us know and we'll see what we can do.

6. Can hammocks be washed?

Yes, to do so grab each end loop and stretch the hammock to its full length. Using thick string or cord bind the end cords and body at about six-inch intervals to keep them from tangling. Put into a pillow case and put it into the washing machine. Wash with mild detergent and cold water. You can also wash it by hand by simply soaking it in a large bucket for a few hours with mild detergent and rinsing it thoroughly in cold water. Hang it to dry. A cotton hammock will shrink right after washing but it returns to normal size when in use again.

7. Do I get any instructions with my hammock?

Yes, with every hammock we include a hammock instructions, use and care guide. You can also view our hammock instructions guide online here - hammock instructions use and care online guide.

8. What is the difference between a spread bar hammock and a hammock without a bar?

A hammock without a bar is a typical Mayan hammock. This is our specialty. It was designed over 1000 years ago by the Mayan Indians and it is considered the most comfortable hammock in the world by customers. These are the double, queen, king and thick cord Mexican hammocks. Hammocks with wooden bars at each end are typically called spreader bar, North American style or resort style hammocks. These are still very comfortable and popular styles of hammocks and due to their attractive look make a great feature in your outdoor living.

13. Can I sleep in a hammock?

Definitely, a perfect use for your hammock, whether it's a mid-afternoon nap, or you want to sleep the whole night through. Studies on hammock have proven their effectiveness in providing deeper and earlier sleep stages. In fact, hammocks are more popular than beds in many areas of Mexico and are the traditional way to sleep.

Hammocks are also great when the weather is hot as the air circulates around you through the diamond weave - a great alternative to deck chairs and bulky sun loungers. They are a great option as a bed replacement and often help reduce and alleviate sleep stiffness, back and hip pain and insomnia. Along with providing much more space and cost effectiveness versus a traditional bed.

14. Do you supply frames or hanging ropes with your hammocks?

As standard, and unless specified hammock stands and hanging accessories are not included with a hammock purchase.

You can easily add any required hanging accessories to your hammock order (and choose your hammock size) by selecting the required items from the on-page option buttons.

Hammock options selection

More information on the particular hanging accessories and the full range can be viewed through the 'hanging accessories' page. The reason for not including hanging accessories with hammocks is that there is no 'one size fits all' accessory and different setups require different hanging accessories. Many shoppers already have existing fixtures or stands in place, so rather than increase prices to cover hanging accessories, we let you purchase solely what you need.

We also have a range of hammocks stands in wood or metal available to purchase and have created package discount deals that include various hammock stand and hammock options. These can be viewed under our 'hammock and stand packages' menu link.

15. Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes. All our hammocks are checked twice and expertly inspected to ensure they are of the utmost quality. However, if for any reason you are unhappy with your hammock, simply return 'as new' for a replacement or refund of your purchase price within the first 30 days. We also provide a 6-month limited guarantee for manufacturing defects. Defects that arise due to improper use or weather influence (sun, wind or rain) are not considered warranty cases. The guarantee does not cover normal wear or defects that occur due to misuse, overloading or cover accidental ‘pulled’ cords.

16. How long does it take to make a hammock?

Being 100% hand-made our hammocks can take anywhere from a week to 30 days to fully complete. Using up to 7km of cord ensures the hammocks are incredibly strong, comfortable and supportive, but can take some time! Completed hammocks as displayed on the website are stocked in New Zealand and ready for immediate delivery.

17. Are your hammocks and other products available in stores?

Yes, we have a few stockists around the country. To view these please see the following page; https://www.hammocksonline.co.nz/pages/stockists

22. How long will my hammock last?

The life of a hammock is influenced by a variety of factors which make it quite difficult to determine an exact length of life.

The main factors that affect the life of a hammock are environmental factors such as exposure to the sun (UV rays) salt water, rain and wind. Consideration of these should be taken into account when choosing your type of hammock, hanging location and cord type (cotton/Duransun®️-polyester).

With proper use and care your Mexican hammock will provide you with years of enjoyment and relaxation. All hammocks come with instructions for caring for your hammock to help prolong its life which we recommend following.

Using a hammock cover provides an easy way of increasing longevity and protecting your hammock when not in use. Other options such as hanging with ‘S’ hooks make it quick and easy to put up and take down your hammock when not in use protecting it from unfavourable elements also.

23. Do you also sell your Mexican hammocks and other products on Trademe?

Yes, we do also list our products on Trademe under username 'jrennie' with a current feedback score of over 2300 and with a 100% positive feedback record. If you feel more comfortable purchasing through Trademe you are more than welcome to do that. But please be aware, we always provide the best deals, have a greater range of product options and offer free delivery on our website but not always on Trademe. - Why? See below. Click here to see our listings - Trademe Listings

24. Why do you offer free delivery on your website but not Trademe?

We do offer free delivery on most items through Trademe now. However, we do still charge for delivery of some items and this is simply due to the higher overhead costs associated with selling our products on Trademe. We work hard to keep our overheads low so we can offer you the best prices and value for your money, but while Trademe is a great medium, as a seller we pay a range of fees, these include fees for listing a product, promoting a product, receiving credit card payments, and a success fee which is 9.9 - 12% of the sale price. As you can imagine this quickly adds up and cuts heavily into our margins. Without these associated fees on our website, we pass on these savings to you via free delivery as an incentive to shop directly through our online store. Sorry, if you have purchased on Trademe and missed out on free delivery, but we hope you understand our position. Any future orders or additional products you wish to purchase directly from our online store or by email will receive free delivery.

25. Is your stock held in New Zealand?

Yes, we are the direct importers and hold all stock on hand in Masterton, New Zealand. This allows fast service and daily dispatch of all goods. We do also have stock in Mexico to allow quick restocking should any items sell out.

We are exclusive New Zealand distributors of Ceilo Hammocks - the only hammocks in the world made by a Fair Trade Federation Member and B Corp company.

26. I don't have the recommended space to hang a hammock, is there any way I can still do so?

Yes, our Mexican hammocks can be shortened to a degree to fit in smaller spaces. We have recently made a video explaining how to easily do this which you can view below and also find further details here; Shortening your Mexican Hammock.

27. Are there any locations in New Zealand that you don't ship to?

No, we can ship anywhere in New Zealand including city, suburb and rural locations, including Waiheke Island. However, we reserve the right to restrict or withdrawal our free delivery offer to certain offshore locations, including Waiheke (hammock stands only), the Chatham and Stewart Islands. Please contact us directly if you require a delivery to these locations and we can discuss delivery options.

Due to the package sizing of our wooden hammock stands, these can only be sent to urban (non-rural) addresses. This is due to the length (2m) being longer than rural contractors will accept.

28. What do I need to hang my hammock?

What you require to hang your hammock will be determined by where you plan to hang it. Such as whether you wish to hang inside, between trees or would like a free-standing frame solution. We have put together a handy little hammock hanging guide here.
