1. What are hammocks made of and what is the difference?

Our hammocks are made from either nylon or cotton cord and both come in a great variety of colours. The main differences are that cotton hammocks are softer and slightly more comfortable, as they stretch and mould more to your body shape. Cotton is the best choice if comfort if your main priority.

Nylon hammocks are also very comfortable, but are slightly firmer and more durable. They have a silky feeling and beautiful vibrant colours. They are better for more constant outdoor use, or if you are traveling with it. Both types still require levels of care to prolong their life, please see below and your hammock instructions.

2. How long will my hammock last, and what special care should I give it?

Your hammock will last for many years if you give it the proper care. It should be sheltered from the elements where possible when not in use, such as not being left outdoors for long periods of time, especially in sunlight and rain. We also suggest wearing appropriate clothing while you are resting in your hammock. Try to avoid buttons, velcro, jewelry, shoes, watches or any other object that might grab or cut cords. Nevertheless cut, broken or burned cords can be repaired by knotting the ends. If you want to leave your hammock outside for extended periods of time we recommend a hammock cover. Both nylon and cotton hammocks need the same proper care. Further details are provided with your hammock instructions

3. How do you hang a hammock?

Hammocks are a very versatile piece of indoor or outdoor furniture and can be hung nearly anywhere by attaching to a strong wall, tree, post, fence, sail boat mast, etc.

When hanging your Mexican hammock you require a space of approx 3.5 metres or greater. A rope (cord or chain) should be attached to the hammock loop ends and continued up in a nice arc so it is tied about 1.8m (6ft) from the ground. At the lowest point the hammock should hang down to a level between your knees and your hips.

For longer or shorter spans simply adjust the length of rope used and hanging heights. For longer distances this can be simply achieved by using longer rope and also tying higher to create the proper hanging height between your waist and knees. Hanging a hammock in a shorter space can also be achieved by knotting the end of your hammock to shorten its total length. Or shorter distances can also be achieved by having the ropes tied higher up (this will create more of a banana shape to the hammock though). Both ends don't need to be fixed from the same height, as long as the end of each hammock is even.

For a wood or concrete wall you can drill or screw in a heavy duty hook (hammock hooks) to use as an attachment point.

Further hanging instructions, along with a use and care guide is included with every hammock.

4. Can I choose my hammock colour?

Yes, no problem. A selection of available colour options are now displayed on each hammock page. Just choose the hammock colour option you want by selecting from the drop down menu and 'add to cart'. As all our hammocks are individually hand-made we are constantly getting new stock with different colours and patterns. You can also choose from nylon or cotton hammock variations.

5. I don't have a Credit Card, can I still make a purchase?

Yes, certainly, no problem there. Proceed to place your order through the website where during the checkout phase you will be given the option of selecting your payment preference. Either credit card, or bank deposit/cheque. Select the bank deposit/cheque option and you will be provided with our account details. Then continue on to confirm the order. Your purchase will be confirmed via email and we will ship as soon as payment reaches us. Alternatively just email us through your order, and we'll send you through our bank details so you can make a direct bank deposit or internet transfer. Once payment has cleared we'll have your purchase sent straight out to you. Want to pay another way? Just let us know and we'll see what we can do.

6. Can hammocks be washed?

Yes, to do so grab each end loop and stretch the hammock to its full length. Using thick string or cord bind the end cords and body at about six inch intervals to keep them from tangling. Put into a pillow case and put it into the washing machine. Wash with mild detergent and cold water. You can also wash it by hand by simply soaking it in a large pot for a few hours with mild detergent and rinsing it thoroughly in cold water. Hang it to dry. A cotton hammock will shrink right after washing but it returns to normal size when in use again.

7. Do I get any instructions with my hammock?

Yes, with every hammock we will email your our hammock instructions, use and care guide that details hanging your hammock, along with care tips, knot tying instructions, and directions for folding to keep your hammock free of tangles. You can also view our hammock instructions guide online here -
hammock instructions use and care online guide.

8. What is the difference between a spread bar hammock and a hammock without a bar?

A single spread bar hammock has a bar at the top - hammock chairs, or across both ends which is known as an American or Resort style hammock. A hammock without a bar is a typical Mayan hammock. This is our specialty. It was designed over a 1000 years ago by the Mayan Indians and it is considered the most comfortable hammock in the world by customers. These are the Double, Queen and King Mexican Hammocks.

13. Can I sleep in a hammock?

Definitely, a perfect use for your hammock, whether it's a mid-afternoon nap, or you want to sleep the whole night through. In fact hammocks are more popular than beds in many areas of Mexico and are the traditional way to sleep. Hammocks are also great when the weather is hot as the air circulates around you through the diamond weave - a great alternative to deck chairs and bulky sun loungers.

14. Do you supply frames or hanging ropes with your hammocks?

None of our hammocks come included with a stand. However we do now stock hammock stands which are sold separately. We have both Wooden Hammock Stands and Metal Hammocks stands available to purchase. Ropes and all other accessories are also sold separately, and can be found along with other useful items including hammock hooks and hammock covers on the accessories page. We do provide package deals on these items, for details please see the specials page.

15. Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes. All our hammocks are checked twice and expertly inspected to ensure they are off the utmost quality. However if for any reason you are unhappy with your hammock, simply return 'as new' for a replacement or refund of you purchase price within the first 30 days.

16. How long does it take to make a hammock?

Being 100% hand-made our hammocks can take anywhere from a week to 30 days to fully complete. Using up to 7km of cotton or nylon cord, ensures the hammocks are incredibly strong, comfortable and supportive. Completed hammocks as displayed on the website are stocked in New Zealand and ready for immediate delivery.

17. Are your hammocks available in stores?

At this stage our hammocks are only available online. We are hoping to get our products into stores over this year. If you are a retail store or know of a store that might benefit from stocking our hammocks please talk to us we'd love to work with you.

18. Can I order from overseas and have sent to New Zealand?

Yes, definitely this is not a problem. However...when you are ordering through Paypal and adding the address details, you may not have the option of selecting a 'New Zealand' address.

To get around this, fill out the billing information screen with your credit card billing address and proceed through to 'review order and continue'.

Now you will see the description of your order. Just below you will see a little box that says ' add special instructions to merchant'. Click on this and a little text box will open up. Now just enter a note along with the address you would like shipped to in NZ.

That'll then come through to us with the payment, and we'll send the order to the NZ address. Any problems or still unsure, just email us and we can get the correct address sorted for you, no problems.

19. Do you have a store?

No, we are solely an online based store. This allows us to keep our overheads low, or service fast and our prices down for you. We are based in Paraparaumu, just north of Wellington. If you would like to view products in person, this may be possible by appointment. See our contact page for details.

22. How long will my hammock last?

The life of a hammock is influenced by a variety of factors which make it quite difficult to determine an exact length of life.

The main factors that affect the life of a hammock are environmental factors such as exposure to sun (UV rays) salt water, rain and wind. Consideration to these should be taken into account when choosing your type of hammock and cord type (cotton/nylon).

However with proper use and care your Mexican hammock will provide you with years of enjoyment and relaxation. All hammocks come with instructions for caring for your hammock to help prolong it’s life which we recommend following.

Using a hammock cover provides an easy way of increasing longevity and protecting your hammock when not in use. Other options such as hanging with ‘S’ Hooks make it quick and easy to put up and take down your hammock when not in use protecting it from unfavourable elements also.

23. Do you also sell your Mexican hammocks and other products on Trademe?

Yes, we do also list our products on Trademe under username 'jrennie' with a current feedback score of over 1100 with a 100% positive feedback record. If you feel more comfortable purchasing through Trademe your are more than welcome to do that. But please be aware, we always provide the best deals and offer free shipping on our website but not on Trademe. - Why? See below. Click here to see our listings - Trademe Listings

24. Why do you offer free shipping on your website but not Trademe?

This is simply due to the higher overhead costs associated with selling our products on Trademe. Like any business we work hard to keep our overheads low so we can offer you the best prices and value for your money. While Trademe is a great medium, as a seller we pay a range of fees, these include fees for listing a product, promoting a product, receiving credit card payments, and a success fee which is 7.5% of the sales price. As you can imagine this quickly adds up and cuts heavily into our margins. Without these associated fees on our website we pass on these savings to you via free shipping as an incentive to shop directly through our online store. Sorry if you have purchased on Trademe and missed out on free shipping, but we hope you understand our position. Any future orders, or additional products you wish to purchase directly through our online store or by email will receive free shipping.

25. Is your stock held in New Zealand?

Yes. We hold all stock on hand in Paraparaumu, New Zealand. This allows fast service and daily dispatch of all goods. We do also have stock in Mexico, to allow quick restocking should any items sell out.

26. I don't have the recommended space to hang a hammock, is there any way I can still do so?

Yes, our Mexican hammocks can be shortened to a degree to fit in smaller spaces. We have recently made a video explaining how to easily do this which you can view here; Shortening your Mexican Hammock.
